Locality: Tucson, Arizona. northeast corner of Broadway and Country Club (32.221837, -110.925791)

Abstract: This site is a 200-by-400 ft. area that is privately owned. Located in metro Tucson, this lot escaped development in 1965 when the Peterson family designated it as a site for preservation of green spaces and potential beautification. Subsequently the care of the lot has been managed by the Men’s Garden Club in the 1960’s, the Audubon Society in the 1970’s and 80’s, and currently Ironwood Tree Experience in partnership with Watershed Management Group. In 1965 the lot was seeded with African Daisies, and has been planted with several non-native and invasive species. The current status of the lot is disturbed with ongoing removal of non-native plants and installation of Permaculture and Xeriscaping techniques. Work is being done on the lot in phases by students and volunteers through the Ironwood Tree Experience program, with the goal of rehabilitating the lot to create a habitat for wildlife and an aesthetically pleasing green space in this urban setting.
