Basal leaves 1(-3)-nerved, linear, 1-5 mm. Heads 10-30 in race-miform to paniculiform arrays. Involucres: staminate 3.5-4 mm; pistillate 3.5-4.5 mm. Phyllaries proximally green, distally white. Corollas: staminate 2.5-3.2 mm; pistillate 2-2.5 mm. Cypselae 1-1.5 mm, sparingly papillate-strigose; pappi: staminate 3-3.5 mm; pistillate 2.5-3 mm. Flowering summer. Moist, open, meadows and drainages, lower montane, ponderosa pine zone; 1000-2200 m; Calif., Nev., Oreg. Subspecies aberrans is characterized by its non-stoloniferous habit and relatively small heads in racemiform to paniculiform arrays.
