Leaf blades pale green, often relatively short, coriaceous, smooth or slightly scabrous adaxially. Perigynia with few hairs near base of beak, otherwise glabrous. 2n = 32. Fruiting mid Apr-early Jul. Open, dry, sandy fields, pine and oak barrens, savannas, dunes, roadsides, ridges; 50-1000 m; Alta., B.C., N.B., Nfld. and Labr., N.S., Ont., P.E.I., Que., Sask.; D.C., Ill., Ind., Maine, Mass., Mich., N.H., N.J., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Pa., Wis.
